Worldclass! 265 species of fish counted on a 60-minute dive
12/01/11 11:55
On a recent Sipadan Island dive trip with Eric Madeja, Old Dominion University student Brian Stockwell made an astonishing achievement. Without proper preparation and on his first dive ever in Sipadan Island, he counted 265 species of reef fish in a single 60-minute dive.
"This was total fish overload" was his initial comment right after surfacing on Sipadan's famous Barracuda Point.
265 species of fish in one 60-minute dive is an extremely high count and has only been surpassed by very experienced ichthyologiest and in very few places on this planet.
Of the 265 species, the highest represented families were:
37 belonged to the Damsel- and Clownfish family
36 to the Wrasses
25 to the Butterflyfish family
25 species of Surgeon- and Unicornfish
16 species of Groupers
12 species of Angelfish
11 species of Snappers
"May be I should target the 300 species of fish in one single dive barrier on our next visit" joked Brian, surprised by his own achievement.

Now that's a mouth full!

A friend asked me recently for advice regarding his baby daughter who stuffs too much food at once into her mouth....I didn’t think it to be so much of a big deal. How dangerous it actually can be I only realized on my last trip to Mataking Island....
